SILKSTONE PARISH IN BLOOM WINNERS YEAR 2000

Members of Silkstone Parish in Bloom are proud to announce that we were the Britain in Bloom winners for the Yorkshire area 2000 Small Country Town section.

The 'Bloomers' first got together about ten years ago, encouraged by Paul Gorman, who then worked for Barnsley MBC.

The main idea was to make the Parish look more inviting to visitors and a more pleasant place to live. So a group of people got together and started planning firstly what they would like to do and how they were going to achieve it.

That is still how things happen. Meetings are held and projects are planned. Money is raised by holding different events like race-nights, treasure hunts, open garden days and raffles. There is plenty of support from local businesses in sponsorship. One of the main things to remember whilst all this is going on is that people have fun! The meetings are held in the local pubs and everybody gets a chance to air their views, some more than others!
