Silkstone Parish Council

The Parish Council is the first tier of local government, with Councillors elected from the local community.

The Parish Council usually meets on the first Monday of every month, alternating the meetings between Silkstone and Silkstone Common. During the week before each meeting notices are placed in the village notice boards giving the time and venue for the meeting. Meetings start at 6.45pm with a public open forum.

Silkstone Recreation Ground, Orchard Wood, The Chestnuts, parish seats, and grant funding to voluntary groups within the two villages are among the things for which the Parish Council is responsible. Parish Councillors attend meetings with various official bodies, such as Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, to discuss proposals to try to obtain the best deal for Silkstone and Silkstone Common.

All this work is voluntary, and Parish Councillors claim only minimal expenses. Most claim none at all.

Please note: The Parish Council is required to give three clear days’ notice in the Parish to advertise its meetings. The Council’s policy is to place the agenda in each of its two notice boards. The first is opposite the Ring O’Bells in Silkstone; the other is outside the Station Inn in Silkstone Common. Whenever possible, the Council will place a copy of the agenda and draft minutes on this website before the meeting.
