COMMUNITY
Village of the Year
Regional Winner
Silkstone and Silkstone Common won the Yorkshire Area 'Village of the Year' competition in 2000. As usual the community got together to put on a great display for the judges. Although it involved a lot of hard work, everybody agreed that it was well worth the effort.
The villages went on to achieve a place in the national finals.
COMMUNITY GROUPS
Many clubs and societies are active within Silkstone and Silkstone Common, with interests ranging from history to horticulture. Old Silkstone Brass Band has achieved success at national level, whilst those involved in 'Silkstone in Bloom' achieved first place in the 2000 Yorkshire Britain in Bloom competition. The two villages also have thriving Scouts and Guides groups, a Twinning Association, conservation societies and organisations devoted to mothers and toddlers.
